Noxious Weeds

Noxious Weeds Summer 2023

As we get into the summer we see that the weeds are coming up in groves.  Along with the thistle there are some other noxious weeds that we recommend that you either spray or dig up.  We have attached some information below.  Our Covenants specifically state “no unsightly weeds shall be permitted to grow or remain on any lot”.   We have been informed that noxious weeds in our valley have begun to flourish in the last number of years and are beginning to threaten our native vegetation.  Attached are two descriptions of additional noxious weeds, Houndstongue, Oxeye Daisies and Hoary Cress (Cardaria draba).  Please review for your own information.  Garfield County has a noxious weed cost share program that might work for you.  We have attached the information below if you are interested.  We hope that everyone will do their best to control their weeds on their property.
Noxious Weeds
Noxious weeds are non-native plants that threaten our natural and agricultural lands and disrupt native ecosystems.  Their presence affects our waterways, wildlife and recreation.
They come to Colorado as seeds in ornamental planting mixes, as nursery stock or or as hitchhikers on the undercarriage of vehicles.  They have been transported from places as far away as Europe, Asia or Africa dn their natural controls, such as insects or diseases, did not arrive with them.  Many of them may still be sold in local nurseries for planting in ornamental landscapes.
Noxious weeds thrive because they are well adapted to our state.  Some of these plants produce roots 15-30 feet long and may produce more than 10,000 seeds per year.
As good stewards of our land, we all must work to keep our lands free of noxious weeds.
Noxious Weed Law
Since 1990, the Colorado State Department of Agriculture has protected the state’s agricultural and natural resources by enforcing regulations controlling noxious weeds.  More recent revisions to the Colorado Noxious Weed Act enable county and municipal governments to implement management programs aimed at noxious weeds in order to reclaim infested acres and protect weed-free land.
